(C) China will study closely the U.S. draft on a Fissile
Material Cutoff Treaty and will carefully consider it, stated
MFA Arms Control and Disarmament Department Nuclear Division
officer Cui Wei. In response to reftel points delivered May
18, Cui thanked the United States for providing the non-paper
and said he would forward the points to the proper
authorities. Qloff stressed that it would be a very
positive step if China were to join other members of the P-5
in declaring a moratorium on the production of fissile
material for use in nuclear weapons or other nuclear
explosive devices.
