1. (C) Vice Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi stressed to
Ambassador Paul Speltz, U.S. Executive Director at the Asian
Development Bank and former Treasury Special Envoy to China, the
importance the Chinese Government attaches to upcoming visits to
the United States by Zhou Yongkang, State Councillor and Minister
of Public Security, and by General Guo Boxing, Vice Chairman of
the Central Military Commission. In a June 23 meeting, VFM Yang
also praised the contributions that Secretary Snow had made to
U.S.-China relations. He highlighted the success of President
Hu's visit to the United States, saying the visit had helped
promote broader and deeper understanding between the United
States and China. Ambassador Speltz noted that all meetings
between the leaders of the United States and China are of great
importance and it is essential to maintain an ongoing dialogue.
