SUBJECT: PRC RESPONDS TO INDONESIA EARTHQUAKE
China provided Indonesia with USD 2 million in cash, RMB 10
million in materials and equipment and an emergency
assistance team in response to the May 27 earthquake, MFA
Asian Affairs Department Deputy Division Director He Wei told
poloff on May 31. The 44 person team, which took a chartered
plane to the affected area, consists mostly of doctors and
nurses along with medical equipment and supplies. The team
included "specialists" sent to assist the Indonesians
estimate the damage and the rebuilding costs. He Wei said he
expects China to play a role in the reconstruction phase,
following this initial immediate response to the humanitarian
needs. The PRC Embassy has not received any reports of death
or injury of PRC citizens or overseas Chinese.
