SUBJECT: MESSAGE DELIVERED TO THE GOAJ ON NATO COMMITMENT
TO AFGHANISTAN

REF: STATE 186256

Classified By: DCM Jason Hyland for reasons 1.4 b and d.

(C) Poloff delivered reftel talking points November 20 to MFA
officer Matin Karimli, who works in the Security Affairs
Department. Karimli remarked that the GOAJ is committed to
ensuring the success of NATO's ISAF mission in Afghanistan.
Karimli noted that as a demonstration of the GOAJ's support
for this key mission, President Ilham Aliyev recently pledged
to double the number of Azerbaijani peacekeepers deployed to
Afghanistan. Karimli noted that there currently are 20-22
Azerbaijani peacekeepers deployed near Kabul and this number
would double after the Azerbaijani Parliament approves this
decision. (Note: Aliyev made the commitment during his
November 8 visit to NATO headquarters.)
