1. (C) On December 21, Charge conveyed the essense of ref a
points to Director of the FM's Cabinet Ambassador Kostas
Chalastanis. Charge reiterated that the U.S. does not
believe that journalists enjoy special rights of protection
beyond those of other persons and thus do not require a
separate resolution. The U.S. continues to prefer that this
issue be handled in the form of a Presidential Statement
(PRST) and that it would best be deferred until 2007. The
U.S. would not block a resolution, however, if a vote were to
come up before December 31, if a resolution on Iran could
move forward, and if changes in the journalist protection
resolution were made as per ref b.
2. (C) Chalastanis was grateful for the information, said it
was useful and provided something to work with, and promised
to convey the information to his Minister and to the Greek
mission in NYC.
