Following ref a demarche by embassy and October 13 follow-up
telephone demarche by SCA PDAS Mann to Turkmenistan's Foreign
Minister Rashit Meredov, embassy received a diplomatic note
from Turkmenistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs October 14
indicating that Turkmenistan will support Guatemala's
candidacy for the UN Security Council. Begin unofficial
translation of MFA dipnote 09/741n, dated October 14:

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan presents its
compliments to the Embassy of the United States of America in
Turkmenistan and, in response to the Embassy's note 135/06 of
February 8, 2006, has the honor to inform the Embassy that
Turkmenistan will support the candidacy of Guatemala in the
election of non-permanent members of the Security Council of
the United Nations, which will take place on October 16, 2006
during the 61st session of the General Assembly of the United
Nations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan avails itself
of this opportunity to renew to the Embassy of the United
States of America the assurances of its highest
consideration."
