Deputy Director General (DAS equivalent) for the Middle East
Sakir Torunlar. Torunlar expressed guarded optimism,
stressing that a cessation of hostilities was necessary for
further progress. The draft was also positive in that it
envisaged a buffer zone and focused on guaranteeing Lebanese
sovereignty over its own territory, which he described as key
to resolving the conflict. Torunlar, who appreciated the
briefing, added that those governments whos countries were
involved in the conflict had to agree to the resolution -
whether or not thy were UNSC members - in order for the UN
effrt to succeed.
