1. (C) Ambassador delivered ref B demarche May 3 to Foreign
Minister Al-Khatib, who confirmed that Jordan will not
support Iran in the upcoming Human Rights Council (HRC)
election. Khatib reiterated to the Ambassador that Jordan is
seeking one of the Asia Group's seats on the HRC (ref C).

2. (C) Poloff earlier delivered ref B demarche to Jamal
Shamayleh of the Foreign Ministry's International
Organizations Department on April 27. Shamayleh said Iran
had asked for Jordan's support for its HRC candidacy, and
that the GOJ replied that it would "review the matter."
Shamayleh said the GOJ had no intention of supporting Iran,
and that he was surprised the Iranians had bothered to ask
for Jordan's vote.
