RADIATION FROM SPENT FUEL RODS
Classified By: DDIR ROBERT S. WANG FOR REASONS 1.4 B/D
C) Dr. Lee Sang-yoon from Los Alamos National Labs briefed
AIT August 18 on the assistance that his agency is providing
Taiwan's Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER) to
measure radiation from spent fuel rods stored on site. Lee
said currently there are 25 rods in wet storage at INER
consisting mostly of metallic uranium. He helped install
plutonium canister counters in the spent fuel pool to
measure the radiation from these fuel rods. Lee said that
once metallic uranium oxidizes it can be moved to dry
storage. It will then need another counter installed to
measure oxidized uranium. Lee said the total amount of
plutonium measured at the INER storage pool is 60 grams which
is a minimal amount.
