1. Post delivered reftel demarche on November 9 to Thomas
Wieser of the Austrian Finance Ministry, Rudolf Scholten of
the Austrian Control Bank, and Ulrike Magloth of the
Chancellery (Prime Minsiter's office). Charge followed up on
November 10 with Magloth, whom the others identified as the
key Austrian official on the issue.
2. Magloth said Austria had not developed a national
position on the draft revised Action Statement on Bribery and
Export Credits. In general, she said, Austria supported
tough measures in this area. We noted that Austria has put
anti-corruption at the center of its agenda as EU President
during the first half of 2006. We urged her to make this
effective by supporting our position. Magloth promised to
give it careful consideration before the November 14-15
meeting of the OECD's Working Party on Export Credits and
Credit Guarantees (ECG).
