1. Econ staff visited an upscale supermarket in San Salvador
to identify examples of foods for sale using names included
in the list in Reftel para. 5. The following were
identified: Mozzarella (made in El Salvador),Pecorino
(Guatemala),Parmigiano (Guatemala and United States),
Manchego (Costa Rica),Mortadella (El Salvador) and
Prosciutto (El Salvador).
2. Public access is available to the National Registry's
trademark database; however, each search costs $20. Econoff
spoke with several local intellectual property attorneys who
indicated that many of the geographical indications listed
in Reftel para. 5 may have been registered prior to 2002
when El Salvador updated its trademark law to meet TRIPS
standards.
