(S) Carmelo Barbarello of the MFA's General Directorate for
Multilateral Economic and Financial Cooperation,
Nonproliferation Coordination Office, called in econoff on
April 28 to provide an update on a case that we brought to
his attention on February 24 (reftels). Barbarello told us
that Italian authorities had contacted the Italian company
Pharmaline SRL, which confirmed that it had been contacted by
an Iranian entity seeking to acquire the chemical
3-Quinuclidinol. Pharmaline representatives further told the
GOI that it had rejected the Iranian solicitation outright,
as the company prefers to do business solely within Italy,
according to Barbarello.
