SUBJECT: KUWAITI AUTHORITIES CRACK DOWN ON "DOOR-TO-DOOR
JIHAD;" ARREST FIVE FOREIGN PREACHERS
1. Local Arabic daily Al-Seyassah reported November 22 that
five extremist preachers -- three Egyptians and two
Indonesians -- were arrested November 21 "for spreading the
doctrine of the terror group al-Qaeda among the inhabitants
of a Kuwaiti city." The paper reported that they went from
door-to-door, talking to citizens on the importance of Jihad
(holy war) and the necessity to re-establish Shari'a
(Islamic law) in the world. The five preachers held the
impromptu religious lessons on Jihad until they were
arrested by Kuwaiti police. Kuwaiti security services are
trying to determine how they entered Kuwait and whether they
had any direct contacts with terrorist groups in Iraq.
2. The arrests come on the heels of recent efforts to curb
extremist ideology, including conferences in Kuwait and
European capitals.
