SUBJECT: DEMARCHE DELIVERED: GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS IN
WTO AGRICULTURE NEGOTIATIONS

REF: SECSTATE 180474

(U) Econoff delivered reftel demarche on October 20 to Alison
Stone, Acting Senior Director of Foreign Trade, Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. Stone told Econoff that
the GOJ would "almost certainly agree that there is no place
for geographical indications in Agriculture Committee
negotiations," and that the TRIPS Council is the appropriate
forum for further discussion of this issue. Stone was aware
that the EU may use the debate as a bargaining chip in
discussions on agriculture. Coincidentally, Stone was to
meet later that day with Ambassador Ransford Smith, the GOJ
Permanent Representative in Geneva, and stated that she would
deliver our position and talking points both to Ambassador
Smith and to the GOJ Mission in Geneva by fax.
