1. (C) We supplied reftel points to Turkish MFA Policy
Planning Department Head Tezel, making clear Turkey is not a
subject of this effort and asking for Turkish views on our
proposed initiative. Tezel, a thoughtful interlocutor,
thanked us and said he would reflect on our initiative and
convey detailed views later. Preliminarily, he suggested
that, where appropriate, we cast our requests to clerics,
officials and others as a way to for them correct mistaken
impressions of Islam and the Islamic world.
