1. (C) Poloff delivered reftel demarche November 17 to Jamal
Al-Shamayleh, chief of the Foreign Ministry's International
Organizations Department. Shamayleh said that he was unsure
if Jordan would have representation at the 24th International
Maritime Organization (IMO) assembly, and that he would
contact Jordan's Ambassador in London to determine if a
Jordanian representative could attend. Shamayleh commented
that Jordan had received several countries' requests for
support in the upcoming IMO election, and noted that, if it
sent a representative, Jordan's support for the United
States' candidacy was guaranteed. Shamayleh noted that
Jordan respected and valued the U.S.'s extensive maritime
expertise.

2. (U) Post also delivered a diplomatic note with points
drawn from reftel to the Foreign Ministry and to Ministry of
Transportation Secretary General Amer Hadad, requesting
Jordan's support for re-election to the IMO Council in
category "A".
