1. (C) Ambassador met with Jordanian Foreign Minister Farouk
Kasrawi November 17. Ambassador said the international
community needs to keep up the pressure on Syria to cooperate
with the UN. Jordan seemed to be on the same page as the
U.S., but he warned Kasrawi not to fall into Syrian Deputy
Foreign Minister Walid Moallem's trap: if his invitations to
Jordanian and other Arab government officials are accepted,
the SARG will trumpet the visits as evidence that Syria is
not isolated and that their behavior has met at least some
states' expectations. Kasrawi replied that Jordan will keep
the pressure on Syria to cooperate. He was aware that Syria
wants to be able to boast of the support of other Arab
governments, particularly Jordan. Jordan will judge Syria by
the extent of its cooperation with the UN and Mehlis.
