(U) This message replaces Amman 8911, which has been recalled.

(C) The Ambassador delivered Ref A demarche to Foreign
Minister Kasrawi November 1, emphasizing that the U.S. needed
Jordan's help in defeating the no-action motion initiated by
Iran and the Organization of the Islamic Conference, and,
when a vote on the resolution came, in voting in favor of the
text. The Ambassador said that it clearly had not been a
good year for human rights in Iran. Kasrawi said he would
call Prince Zaid, but cautioned that a favorable vote on the
actual resolution may be difficult this year. COMMENT:
Ambassador will raise this issue with the Royal Palace; their
past guidance to the Foreign Ministry to keep a line of
communication open with the Iranians may account for
Kasrawi's reaction.
