1. (S) Post is monitoring closely the security environment
for Jordan and for the Gulf of Aqaba in light of three
potential threats reported in refs. The U.S.-Jordan naval
exercise Infinite Moonlight will take place in the Gulf of
Aqaba August 13-25. The deployment will include port calls
and shore leave for four U.S. naval vessels at Aqaba.

2. (S) Amman RSO, RMAS, and DAO Amman's force protection
office are closely engaged with Jordanian security and
military at senior levels to ensure that security
preparations for the planned exercise, port calls and shore
leave are appropriate. Post's emergency action committee
convened August 1 and concluded that preparations for all
planned aspects of exercise Infinite Moonlight should proceed
while post monitors the security environment closely (septel
reports aspects of the EAC meeting not related to Infinite
Moonlight). EAC will reconvene in the coming week in order
to review the security situation and the appropriateness of
proceeding with activities planned in connection to Infinite
Moonlight.
