SUBJECT: NEW GSPC COMMUNIQUE WARNS OF FAKES



1. (U) The Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC)
issued a statement September 10 warning against faked
communiques issued by Abu Turab al-Jaza'iri in the name of
the GSPC. The communique said al-Jaza'iri has no direct or
indirect connection to the GSPC and that his communiques are
not official GSPC statements.

2. (SBU) In July, Al-Jaza'iri issued a statement, in the name
of the GSPC, praising Al-Qaeda's killing of two Algerian
diplomats in Iraq. Algerians viewed the killings as a
national tragedy, and GSPC's statement served to further
undermine the already-limited public sympathy the group
enjoys. The September 10 statement is indicative of
factionalism with the GSPC as well as of a split within the
GSPC over the group's earlier support for the killings.
