1. The Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) issued
a communiqu on their website July 15 stating that five GSPC
members were killed during the June 4 attack in Mauritania.

- Ibrahim Abu Ishak; Ghardaia, Algeria. Ishak also fought in
Afghanistan, according to the website.

- Yahia; Reghaia, Algeria

- Assem Ettebessi; Reghaia, Algeria

- Abu Djejana; University of Biskra.

- Bachir El-Gherbi; University of Biskra


2. Arabic-language daily El Khabar reported that GSPC Zone 9
Deputy Emir Brahim Griga (aka Ibrahim Abu Ishak) was one of
the planners for the June 4 attack. Griga has close ties
with Mokhtar Belmokhtar. Both Belmokhtar and Griga are from
Ghardaia, Algeria, and left the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) to
join the GSPC in 1999. In 2000 they were in charge of key
missions involving illegal weapons trafficking along the
Pan-Sahel (Zone 9) region. Brahim Griga is the brother of
GSPC member Noure-Eddine Griga, who is in custody in Algeria,
charged with involvement in the 2003 kidnappings of European
tourists.
