SUBJECT: DEFEATING THE G-4 FRAMEWORK RESOLUTION: UAE
POSITION

REF: A. STATE 132429

B. ABU DHABI 3072

C. STATE 126870

Classified By: Ambassador Michele J. Sison, reasons 1.4 (b) and (d).

(C) Pol Chief made ref A demarche on the G-4 framework
resolution on UN reform to MFA Director for International
Organizations Yacub Al Hosani on July 19, urging that the UAE
oppose the resolution, or at minimum abstain. The UAEG had
already taken a decision not to support the resolution, Al
Hosani said, but had not yet decided whether to vote against
it or abstain. He said there was a possibility that the G-4
might withdraw their resolution pending their meeting with
the African Union. Ambassador had made ref C demarche to MFA
U/S Abdullah Rashid Al Noaimi on July 12, emphasizing that
governments should continue to focus on a comprehensive range
of UN reform issues.
