(C) PolMilOff delivered reftel demarche to MFA Acting
Nonproliferation Director Joan Wiegman on October 14.
Wiegman said the Netherlands' delegation to the UNFC in New
York has explained that the GONL is "rather satisfied" with
the current draft of the "New Agenda" resolution. She said
that if it remains in its current form, the Netherlands will
support it. PolMilOff pushed back with reftel points, noting
that the draft was not balanced and placed too much focus on
nuclear weapons states. PolMilOff also stressed that
divisions between allies on this issue were not helpful going
into the 2005 NPT RevCon. Wiegman claimed there was more
support among allies for the new text, and cited Dutch
internal reporting which suggesting the Norwegians and
Australians see the current text as a big improvement.
Comment: Post will elevate this issue with the GONL here,
and believes it would useful to also raise again with the
Dutch delegation in New York. End comment.
