(C) Ambassador discussed NATO Deputy Secretary General
Alessandro Minuto Rizzo's recent visit to the UAE with MFA
Under Secretary Abdullah Rashid Al Nuaimi on October 11.
Abdulla Rashid, who had met Rizzo at NATO Headquarters
earlier this year, said Rizzo's September 28 mission to the
UAE clarified NATO's role and the purpose of the Istanbul
Cooperation Initiative (ICI). He said he and Deputy Prime
Minister/Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sheikh
Hamdan Bin Zayed were receptive to the ICI's focus on
training. He emphasized that it was in the UAE's interest
to have cooperation with NATO. Abdullah Rashid said the
UAE Armed Forces would be developing their own response to
the ICI based on the military's needs. We will follow up
with our armed forces contacts.
