SUBJECT: END OF TEXTILE QUOTAS - UAE REQUEST FOR
INFORMATION
1. This is an action request. Please see para. 3.
2. Ministry of Economy and Commerce Office Director Ali Al-
Fayel contacted EconChief on May 26 to ask about the U.S.
plans for lifting textile quotas at the end of 2004. In a
follow on letter, the Ministry formally requested
information on USG plans to lift its quotas on textiles and
on the system that will replace quotas. The Ministry noted
that the end of 2004 is approaching and requested the
information in order to take the "appropriate action" to
develop the textile industry. The Ministry also asked
whether the USG is making any special arrangement to deal
with China after the lifting of quotas, since China is more
competitive than many other WTO members in the field of
textiles and apparel.
3. Action Request: Please provide us with any information
that we can share with the UAEG on this subject.
