SAUDI ARABIA

1. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for
Foreign Affairs Shaykh Hamdan bin Zayed Al-
Nahyan (HBZ) issued a very strong condemnation on May
29 against those who carried out the terror attacks in
Al-Khobar. The official statement quoted HBZ as
saying that UAE President Shaykh Zayed, the UAEG, and
the Emirati people would "put their resources at the
disposal of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and further
reaffirm their readiness to work alongside the Saudi
leadership to eliminate those thugs who are bent on
destruction, bloodletting, terrorism and wreaking
havoc without any iota of conscience."

2. The UAE's leadership had used harsh words to
condemn past bombing attacks in Saudi Arabia and Iraq,
but HBZ's language was perhaps the toughest we have
seen in a while, including the UAEG's reaction to the
November 2003 bombing at a residential compound in
Riyadh. HBZ's pledge of solidarity with the Saudi
government echoed earlier UAEG promises of support for
the Saudis' anti-terror drive after the November 2003
bombing.
